About Villa Mia

The Villa Mia is our luxury detached single-storey villa in the foothills of the White Mountains in Western Crete.  'Mia' is the Greek femine word for 'one', which we feel sums up this unique property.

There is only one Villa Mia.

The Villa Mia offers privacy without isolation, with shops, tavernas and stunning antiquities within an easy walk, ensuring a holiday destination for everyone.

Sleeping 5 and set on the edge of the traditional Cretan village of Gavalochori, the villa was purpose built to our own specifications and thus is truly unique and not some ugly, mass-produced, box-like house surrounded by others just like it.

With a solar-heated, 10m x 4m mosaic-tiled swimming pool entered via shallow non-slip steps through a Roman-style stone arch, shaded terraces, paved sun bathing area and roof terrace with stunning views , you won't need to leave the gated grounds to make your holiday one of peace, beauty and relaxation.

There are four distinct paved areas for outside dining, not including the roof terrace which offers particularly fantastic views of the White Mountains at any time of the day or night, for breakfast or sunset cocktails.

Set in its own grounds and overlooking forests, mountains, olive groves and the sea, the villa offers everything that would be needed for the perfect holiday for families and small parties of all ages - from honeymoon to retirement - and all year round.

Avoid the mass-tourism crush of package holidays by holidaying independently with us at the same cost as a mid-range hotel package, with Greek and English speaking support available locally 24 hours a day should you need it.

Villa Mia is no longer accepting commercial bookings after 2024. Thank you for your patience. If you are a friend or relative then please feel free to get in touch.

The Surrounding Area

The villa offers a wonderful compromise of solitude and privacy whilst being on the edge of a traditional Greek village with everything you need for a relaxing holiday. It forms part of a small group of individually owned properties on the hillside just above the village, each set in its own grounds, so you won't feel too isolated and can seek company when you want to.

The pine forest behind the villas is protected green belt and abounds with wild life - Cretan martens sometimes scamper down from the cover of the trees to drink at the poolside in the evening, and we often see and hear buzzards and ravens circling overhead.

Immediately to the front of the villa there is a paved access road to the village, receiving only a handful of vehicles a day but making the villa easily accessible by car from all local routes. Below this, at the far side of the road, an olive grove rustles with sheep grazing in the shade of the trees, wild almond and fig trees dot the boundary, and beyond there are magnificent views to the idyllic hilltop village of Douliana (where there is an outstanding traditional Cretan restaurant) and across to the blue waters of Souda Bay.

A few minutes stroll down the lane takes you to the village centre with a selection of truly excellent tavernas and cafes, a well stocked bakery, the village folk museum and a handful of shops.

Up the lane a short walk takes you into the band of pine forest and the nearest ancient site to the villa - a unique set of Venetian wells which formed the original water supply for the village.

In the evening, the sun sets over the White Mountains, flooding the skies with oranges and purples in full view of the villa, whilst you sip your Martini on the terraces and watch the ferry wending its way to Athens and listen to the tinkle of goat bells and the haunting sound of the scops owl in the valley below.
